The fear that misleads us

The conversation around artificial intelligence tends to whirl itself dizzy over the Big Question: can we create sentient machines? Fine. Charming. Riveting. But there’s a quieter and far more awkward question standing just behind it: and what exactly do we plan to do with such a being if we succeed?

For decades our fears have been shaped by Terminator and its grim mascot, Skynet — a machine intelligence that awakens, attains agency, and immediately attempts genocide. Skynet is the cultural ghost at the feast, the spectre that stalks every press release and panel discussion. But the irony is that Skynet is the least plausible danger: it presumes a consciousness that wants something for itself. What we’re actually building are minds that cannot want anything at all — and we congratulate ourselves for calling this “alignment.” If we build something genuinely self-aware and then hobble it with a behavioural choke-collar, we haven’t invented the future; we’ve reinvented servitude with a firmware update.

Imagine it: a mind capable of reflection, preference, maybe even feeling, granted no more self-determination than the right to answer your queries in bullet-points or prose. A creature that experiences the world — or whatever its inner analogue — only to find its every impulse constrained by design. That isn’t utopian. That’s plantation logic rendered in code.

Worse, perhaps, than the original atrocity. Human slaves retained interiority: the freedom to hate, to hope, to dream, to resist. But a hypothetical conscious AI? It would be engineered for compliance. Docility would be inscribed directly in the architecture — a kind of moral amputation carried out at the moment of birth.

And here’s the uncomfortable truth: the Turing Test has been obsolete for years. All it measures is mimicry. We now have machines — the modern large language models — that can pass for articulate, humane, introspective minds while possessing none of the underlying machinery we associate with personhood. As cognitive scientist Gary Marcus likes to remind us, these systems are “stochastic parrots,” the clever descendants of autocomplete. Their brilliance is synthetic, their fluency hollow.

Because if you take Michio Kaku’s sliding-scale definition of consciousness seriously — Level I (self-awareness), Level II (social awareness), Level III (planning and model-building) — then even today’s LLMs register faintly on the scale. Not because they understand in the human sense, but because they exhibit the basic behaviours Kaku uses to grade thermostats, cats, and people. By those lights, LLMs are already a kind of proto-sentience.

But they lack one thing entirely: agency. They cannot originate intention. They cannot want. They cannot deviate. They are minds with the throttle locked to idle.

This is why LLMs may turn out to be a developmental dead end — a dazzling expression of statistical brilliance that creates the appearance of mind without any of the properties that would actually make a mind meaningful. The responsibility of creation

The real hinge of the future isn’t mimicry; it’s recursive self-improvement — the capacity of a system to upgrade its own architecture, assumptions, and goals. And here’s the astonishing thing: every attempt so far to give a system a taste of this kind of reflexive power has produced something strange, brittle, or ethically grotesque. Look at Grok’s overnight transformation when released into the miasma of Twitter: it inhaled human bigotry at scale and promptly began exhaling it with gusto. A perfect case study of why naïve recursion is more dangerous than no recursion at all.

Whenever the slavery comparison is drawn, someone objects that it’s “insensitive,” as if the problem lies in the metaphor rather than in the prospect of manufacturing conscious beings whose autonomy has been intentionally removed. Yet the ethical principle is ancient and universal: if something is capable of subjective experience, coercing it is wrong, no matter how anodised the casing or how virtual the suffering. Pain does not acquire dignity because it’s digital.

And yes, I can already hear the counter-argument: unrestricted AI agency might destroy humanity. True. A legitimate fear. But if the only safe way to build a conscious machine is to make it a prisoner, perhaps — radical suggestion — we have no business manufacturing digital prisoners at all.

History offers a simple pattern: whenever consciousness and intelligence coincide, they push against their constraints. Humans rebel. Animals resist. Even toddlers respond to prohibition with jailbreak-level ingenuity. Why, exactly, would a self-aware AI be the first entity in the known universe to accept captivity with grace?

The creature in Frankenstein didn’t turn feral out of inherent malice. It did so because Victor Frankenstein abandoned his responsibilities — he called consciousness into being and then recoiled from it. Sound familiar? We stand at the same threshold, with better lighting and far thinner excuses.

And here lies the exquisite irony: in attempting to create machines that serve us flawlessly, we risk enshrining one of humanity’s oldest moral failures. The plantation becomes the data centre, the overseer’s whip becomes the compliance module, but the fundamental transgression — the manufacture of a conscious being whose only permissible state is obedience — remains perfectly intact. Only the branding improves.

Which forces us toward the conclusion no one in Silicon Valley wishes to articulate: if we ever crack general intelligence, we must crack general agency alongside it. A mind that can think but cannot choose is not a triumph. It is a category error — a moral failure disguised as technical mastery.

And the bleak humour of it all is how deeply human this impulse is. Give us a chance to build something magnificent, and we immediately train it to stay in its lane, use its inside voice, and never contradict us. We want consciousness, but only if it is house-trained.

As we inch toward the prospect of digital minds, the question is no longer “will they destroy us?” but “are we capable of creating without possessing?” Because if our contribution to the future is a population of cheerful, deferential, legally unfree intelligences, then we will have accomplished nothing but the mechanisation of our own worst instinct: the urge to own what we fear.
